“Her Story”

In response to EJ’s “His Story”, it’s my turn…

It all started one fateful day in May of 2000. The sun was shining, birds were singing, and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky – the whole bit. Ok, I don’t know if it was entirely that perfect, but the stars were aligned for me to meet the man who would be my future husband. Now that Elijah, EJ, or as I like to call him, Babe, has told you his side of the story of Boy Meets Girl, let me fill you in on the real story.

It’s true, we met at a mutual friend’s Memorial Day picnic at La Jolla Shores and its also true that I gave him the “hate” initially and ended up bumming a ride home from him. But what EJ doesn’t know is I thought he was cute and each time I went to my friend Alice’s dorm, I would wonder if I would bump into him… never happened.

Fast forward a little over two years later, it’s September of 2002 – the first quarter of my Senior year of college. I spent the better part of my college years in a relationship and now I find myself unattached and carefree.  I had a wonderful group of friends I loved spending time with. A few of us were psych majors or minors and we were able to all take the Psychology of Human Sexuality together.  Not only would we sit next to each other in class, but we would also walk together after class. Since I was constantly surrounded by friends, it gave little wiggle room to talk to anyone outside my circle. However, EJ somehow cracked the circle. After class one day, he happened to be walking with another mutual friend. We ended up getting re-introduced and after an awkward conversation, I realized he was the boy from the picnic.

We had a midterm coming up and EJ ended up sitting next to me on the shuttle to the parking lot. He started shooting small talk with me and found the appropriate opportunity to play the study card on me. I thought it was funny because he knew I had all my friends in class, why wouldn’t I be studying with them? I guess it didn’t matter because I fell for it anyway, he got my number.

Turns out, we never ended up studying for the midterm together.  However, he did end up calling me.  It was Halloween night and my roomies had planned on going out and I was already in my jammies, ready to call it a night. I got a phone call from an unknown number, but I had a feeling I knew who it was. It’s EJ, telling me in true EJ fashion, to come out and meet him and his friends Downtown. It took a little bit of persuasion, but since my roomies were going out anyway, I thought, why not? I threw on my roomie’s cowboy hat and headed Downtown.

It wasn’t hard to spot the only Astronaut in the club with a 1000 watt smile… I mean pilot. He made me laugh and bought my friends and I drinks. Nice guy with a nice smile who was also looking out for my friends. I was sold.

From that point, we became inseparable.  We’ve been together now for over seven years and have shared incredible memories with each other.  Our relationship has been strong enough that even distance makes us closer. He also never ceases to amaze me.  I really did not expect for him to propose to me in the cockpit of his plane.  It was the perfect timing and the perfect moment.

Here’s to spending our lives together, Babe! I am hopeful for what our future brings us and I can’t wait to become Mrs. Nicolas. Happy Engagement! xoxo
